Vicenza is located 40 minutes from Venice and was once home to the infamous Andrea Palladio. Vicenza is known for a host of architectural marvels, from Palladios Bacillica Palladiana to the Villa Rotunda. The site for our project was bombed during ww2 leaving a hole in the fabric of the city. The building that was build in the space has not aged well and will require replacement.
The redesign of an underutilized section of the Piazza at the heart of the city of Vicenza was an exercise in both cultural consideration and timely research. The city of Vicenza will use the new space to house a permanent market hall, an art museum to further define Vicenza as the arts and cultural capital. A Palladio exhibit hall and library were also an important component to the program as they showcase the strong historical ties and the importance Palladio played in shaping the city. To reactivate the piazza, the city of Vicenza added an amphitheater and play space for children within the piazza to encourage additional musical events.
I drew design influence and place-making strategies from the site context and the surrounding region. Our studio studied and visited many of the great works by Carlo Scarpa, Peter Zumthor, Renzo Piano, and David Chipperfield in Northern Italy and Austria, and Switzerland. The modern iteration proposed aims to tie together the old world forms with modernity and grace.
vicenza x art
Vicenza, It. was once home to Andrea Palladio, widely considered to be one of the most influential individuals in the history of architecture, and true masters of design. Through integrating art into the public space a renaissance may be spurred.
la dolce vita
The Italian piazza is the center of public life. After a term of in depth research on piazza design, key factors were identified to create a space that is both welcoming and encourages accessible use for all. Piazza vitality spills out of the museums lower level and encourages users to take a front row seat to a show, slash in the fountains, or enjoy apretivo along the edge.
